The Local SEO Checklist for Service Businesses

Local SEO gets talked about like it's one big, vague activity. In practice, it's a specific set of fundamentals that need to be in place before content or link building can do much good. This checklist covers the foundation — the things worth confirming before investing further.
On Google
- Google Business Profile claimed, verified, and fully completed
- Primary and secondary categories chosen deliberately, not by default
- Service areas or address accurately reflect where you actually operate
- Photos, business hours, and attributes kept current
- A process in place for collecting and responding to reviews
On your website
- A dedicated page for each core service, not one page trying to cover everything
- Location or service-area pages if you cover more than one area
- Clear NAP (name, address, phone) consistency across the site
- Fast load times, especially on mobile — most local searches happen on a phone
- A clear, repeated call-to-action: call, book, or enquire
Off your website
- Consistent business listings across major citation sources
- Local backlinks from relevant, legitimate local sources
- Structured data (schema) marking up your business type, services, and location
Measurement
None of the above matters if you can't see whether it's producing leads. Call tracking, form tracking, and attribution back to source keyword and page turn 'we did SEO work' into 'here's what it produced' — which is the only version of the report that actually matters to a business owner.
